Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures with a high success rate of improving vision in patients.  Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure requiring less than ten to fifteen minutes to complete.  For the majority of cases, Dr. Nemi does not require a needle, stitch, or eye patch.

The Procedure

After the patient receives intravenous sedation and topical anesthesia, the surgeon performs phacoemulsification to remove the cloudy natural lens from eye.  Next, the doctor inserts and intraocular lens (IOL) which remains permanently in the eye to replace the removed natural lens.  The IOL compensates for the focusing power the natural lens provided.  Modern IOLs are designed for various functions and are made out of different materials - your surgeon will know which is most appropriate for your individual case.  Following the surgery, the doctor will have you wear sunglasses and provide you with eye drops to use as directed.

The Recovery

The patient may return home the day of the procedure.  With proper rest and avoidance of any strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, recovery is usually a matter of days, with little or no discomfort.  Several follow-up appointments are required to ensure the eye is healing properly following the surgery.
